Termite Monastery & All the Same

TERMITE MONASTERY

Termite Monastery took maybe 2.5 hours. To remake, it would take less than 1 hour. It’s the first piece this year. Writer’s Block is a myth compared to Potter’s Block. It doesn’t even come close. There has to be a certain frame of mind involved before being prepared to shape something respectable from a lump of clay, especially hands only with no extruder involved (extruders make clay worms of varying thicknesses which can be wrapped or weaved into interesting shapes). As is common, there was a point when it was nearly scrapped and scrunched up to start again, but anything is salvageable because it’s a trial and error process. The clay does exactly what you want. A.D

DB TINK: Sample of latest song (bottom). The keyboard is running out of voices. What we have here is two versions of the same track, separated by 5 years and a better unit. Play old one first (top), but watch your ears don't pop. It was never DB Tink's purpose to create perfectly sounding tunes - nor harsh and screechy either though, ha! He only recorded stuff any old crap way so as not to forget the melody. He's saving them for when he has the right mike, and a belting machine. Give him a studio, and he’ll give you the world.

A Keyboard and Personal PC computer are 2 heavy contenders for desert island objects. What would you wish for if you were stranded on a desert island for all eternity: pool table, packed larder, expresso maker, doll house, toilet roll, go kart, the complete and unabridged commentaries of every test cricket match ever played as an audio book, a life size bronze cast of Laurence Llewelyn Bowen......or a better genie?

Comeback Legs...and Singing

Dedication to Steel is to Embrace a World of Pain
For whatever reason, I stayed outta da gym for months. For an iron brother, it’s worse than cheating on your wife. That first time back after a layoff is the hardest. You just don’t want to go. You want to call it a day for good. The longer you leave it, the harder it gets. But I dragged myself there eventually with an hour to go b4 closing time and plonked my bony arse down on the seated calf raise machine.

On my way I nipped into Tesco and read FLEX. I didn’t know Tesco stocked FLEX. I was lucky because the mag wasn’t plastic wrapped. It only took me 5 minutes to read. I can’t believe I used to buy that rehash religiously.

Anyway, cutting to the chase, I had an absolute monster leg session. I wasn’t screaming or grunting, or rushing headlong into sets with the hunger and determinedness I had when I was 23 and hell-bent on getting huge, but it was...well, comprehensive. I remember one sesh in particular back in the day when my quads were the best pumped they had ever been before or since – the teardrops were drum tight and hard and taut beneath my trackies. They were humongous.

No, this was different. I took my time, and I didn’t especially push myself, but I COVERED ALL THE BASES. It’s one thing going all out on dumbbell curls for biceps, but there’s hardly any such thing as even taking it easy on squats. Let’s face it, squatting with an empty back is rather uncomfortable. And squat I did, first time in eons, straight after calves, which I always do first. Free weight, smith machine, and hack, front and back. I decided against sissy squats, because I’m not a sissy.

It was the COMPLETE leg workout (the only little thing I left out was a small personal movement for shins I invented myself which you wouldn’t understand). The main reason why is because I was UNINTERRUPTED. No chitchat. No exchanging pleasantries. It’s fine when you are in your pomp, and you are just topping up that almost constantly buff feeling 5 or 6 visits to the gym a week merits, but nattering with your buddy during a Comeback Legs workout doesn’t figure. No way. And people know it. They sense your vibe. Comeback legs is no field trip.

Today, I’m hurting. That’s standard. I get up from a seated position like an old man. Proper gritting my teeth every time. It’s beautiful though, in a morbid way. Tomorrow will be even worse. But that feeling of walking down the gym steps last night, after it was all over...

...FOR EVERYTHING ELSE, THERE’S MASTERCARD.

(shud of warmed up however. the squats shocked my nervous system. my legs were physically shaking)

Eat up or Shut up...it's a Gruel World---------------------------MUSIC----------------------------

DB TINKERBELL bought a keyboard about 6 years ago, but only learned how to mix his lyrics with some songs last night. It’s not straightforward – nothing is with a personal PC computer, apart from turning the hunk straight off at the wall* – but it represents a milestone of sorts nonetheless. Ironic that it should be just the beginning of a journey then, because his kind of lyrics involve a female opera singer and a children’s tabernacle choir on backing vocals. No mixed sex backing vocals, no deal. One man singing alone, no matter how good or bad, is not enough. He can’t believe his phone has that geofence tech (whereosphere) but no sound recorder. If it did, he could ask girls in the street for quick voice samples...the blond in TSB has the voice of an angel.

*Was waiting half an hour for this 30 second clip to upload, because it' was a Windows Movie, not a Windows Media (TM) movie, like that's important. It would have had me there waiting all night. Half an hour, for a 30 second clip.

Music Update

Yamaha XDJ
DB Tinkerbell's fingers are back where they belong again......roaming over plastic keys. He's been out of production for what must be a whole 2 years, with only a miserable organ to keep his practice up after losing his previous equipment to weather damage. The organ was hardly dusted off, it was so rubbish. This is only his third keyboard (which equals his number of cars), and he is delighted to have secured another Yahama. After proving himself by really playing his way through every note during the The Aliens Are Coming (2006), if that makes any sense, it is now time to sit back with a machine like this and let the samples do the work, finally giving meaning to the catchphrase: 'Going for a key change...'

"Got a fantastic lucky deal considering what you get for your buck in an Argos catalogue," says Tinkerbell after first impressions with his new toy. "It's taken me 2 hours to know where I am with it though. It's like a honeymoon period where we are both getting to know each other. At first I thought it wasn't for me, because I like to play, but this is a fantastic noise machine. Ideally, I have 2 keyboards, one to compose melodies and one to make noises. I've got the other one lined up, a PSR 1700, another oldie. First thoughts with this thing though is this: Give me a bit of time, and I could stand in for Tiesto at Ibiza."

DB Tinkerbell will continue to upload existing tracks onto his YouTube channel while working on new ones for the future. Simply search Quasarboy 77 on YouTube for videos. All videos courtesy of Ya what, ha? Productions®.

DB Tinkerbell

Album Title: The Aliens Are Coming

Composed on: Yamaha PSR-160, PSS-360, YRS-248

Is a musician only as amateur as his instruments. He has always said that if WOL could give him a studio then he would give WOL the world. He created his debut album on ancient second-hand keyboards. His tagline was, at the time, although not any more, ‘music without computers’. Despite the concept being good, and the most notable tracks very moody, the ultimate recording of the project was not even competent enough to be classed as amateurish. At times the CD can be tinny and hissy to the extent that one reviewer deemed it ‘horrendous’(although it was a close friend trying to get some kip at six in the morning after a very heavy night!)

There are more tunes to be released from that same album at a slower tempo, and a couple of additional new bonus tracks, but work will not begin on a new album until WOL can provide some more modern equipment. Then he hopes to compile his second album in the blink of an eye.

Personally, I still immensely enjoy ‘The Aliens Are Coming’ now and again, but sometimes I feel like it hurts my ears.
